  • What is Ubuntu?

    January 24th, 2009

With some delay gave his account so far no article explaining what nezapoznatite of Ubuntu. On the next series will try a few sentences to give a general idea of that operating system and ideas s description was taken from 1:1 support files of Ubuntu. Those of you, as is known - may calm to omit this material.

The principles of Ubuntu: Ubuntu (Ubuntu) operating system is completely open source, built around the Linux kernel. Ubuntu community is built around the ideals embodied in Filisofiyata of Ubuntu: that software should be free, that software tools should be polzvaemi people of their native language, regardless of their disability, that people should have the freedom to customize and modify software How you deem fit. For these reasons:

    • Ubuntu will always be free and not “surcharges” for “enterprise” edition for big business - providing the best of our work every free under the same conditions.
    • Ubuntu includes the best translations and accessibility system that can offer the community of free software to Ubuntu polzvaem by as many people.
    • Ubuntu is issued at regular and predictable intervals, a new edition is released every six months. You can use the current stable release or the current edition under development. Each edition is maintained for at least 18 months.
    • Ubuntu is entirely dedicated to the principles for development of open source software, encourage people to use open source software, to improve and go forward

The name Ubuntu: Ubuntu is a South African ethical ideology focusing on human relationships and loyalty to one another. The word comes from the Zulu language and Khosa. Ubuntu (rule “ubuntu”) is considered a traditional African principle and is considered one of the fundamental principles of the new South Africa, as it relates to the idea of Afrisanski Renaissance.

Rough translation of the principle of Ubuntu is “humanity to others”. Another interpretation could be: “faith in the general context of sharing that connects all of humanity.”

Free software: Ubuntu project is fully dedicated to the principles of development of free software, people are encouraged to use free software to improve and go forward.

“Free software” does not mean that we should not pay for it (although Ubuntu is entirely dedicated to free also). This means that you can use the software in any way you want - code establishing free software is available for each withdrawal, modification, repair and use in any way. Along with the ideological benefits that freedom has technical advantages - when programs are developed, labor efforts of others can be the basis on which to build. With non-free software that can not happen and when programs should be initiated from zero. Therefore, the development of free software is a fast, efficient and exciting!

Why choose exactly Ubuntu: There are many operating systems based on Linux: Debian, SuSE, Gentoo, RedHat and Mandriva are examples. Ubuntu is another competitor in what is now silnokonkurirasht world. What makes Ubuntu different?

Based on Debian, one of the most widely respected, technologically advanced and well-supported distributions, Ubuntu aims to create a distribution that provides a modern and full Linux system for desktop computers and servers. Ubuntu includes carefully selected packages from the distribution of Debian, and retain its strong management system package that allows easy installation and clean Remove Programs. Unlike most distributions, which are supplied with a large quantity of software that may or may not be useful, the list of packages of Ubuntu is reduced to some important applications of high quality.

Focusing on quality, Ubuntu creates a stable and high capacity computer environment that is suitable for use in home, and the business environment. The project used as time is needed for emphasis on small details and is able to issue a version containing the latest and best of today’s software once every 6 months. Ubuntu is available for i386 (386/486/Pentium (II / III / IV) and Athlon / Duron / Sempron processors), AMD64 (Athlon64, Opteron, and new 64-bit Intel processors) and PowerPC (iBook / Powerbook, G4 and G5) architectures.

  • Microsoft claims that open source applications infringe their patents over 230

    January 24th, 2009

Or, as alleged in an interview for Fortune their heads Lawyer:
    - The core of Linux infringes their patents 42
    - Its user interface - 65
    - OpenOffice.org ’s charged with 45 violations
    - Another 83 within a variety of applications open.

Well … I think this time really be cast. Even if I have violated that patent (which may be true), Microsoft does not of concern for intellectual property (or at least not in the true sense of the word). Makes it clean and just blow into belts leading to open-source world. But I think this is a spoon too big for their mouth, especially given that one of the biggest players in the market as IBM, Dell, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola and Oracle are direct supporters of the open code and in particular the GNU / Linux.

  • How to install Ubuntu?

    January 24th, 2009

There are two ways to install Ubuntu. The first of them is using the so-called. Live CD, and the second - through so-called. Alternative CD. In most cases use the Live CD method, which is more easy for novice or unfamiliar with GNU / Linux user. Below you will see that body. The idea of Live CD appeared several years ago and quickly became popular among much of GNU / Linux distribution. What is it? In this method operating system (OS) can be loaded directly from the CD and to test the user, without the need to install the hard disk. To do this when you start the computer, the system BIOS should be chosen as the first charge (boot) drive CD drive. Then you only need to wait several minutes to load the OS. After loading your OS is ready for work, ie All programs included in it are ready and in place. This method is very convenient, especially because it is safe. Each one of you make or actions they take with charged that OS is lost in izgasyane computer. So while you calm and willing to try multiple programs and their functions without fear of error.

This method is chosen by the creator of Ubuntu as a major. In placing the Live CD (or Desktop CD, as they call it on the site) in the CD drive and start your computer meets the initial installation screen:

In the displayed menu has several different lines. By default, was elected the first and most commonly used method to load and install Ubuntu. Among other possibilities are starting to “safe” graphic mode, if not see an image after starting the disc, install disk with updating, checking the disk for defects before his test memory and release of the CD and boot from the hard disk computer. Additionally this has the opportunity to indicate various optional parameters. Since their use is relatively rare, we look normal installation and boot.

After selecting the first item on the top menu Ubuntu load for several minutes, depending on the computer. The following is a look at the first boot:

Since then, already have full-featured OS. Without you installed anything yet, already have access to all programs in this fully operational form. After “spending” out of Ubuntu and decide that you like, starts the real part of installing it. To do this just start from the work area (Desktop) icon Install. Its launch will give the council, using a 7 easy steps will have a full-featured OS installation and within 30 minutes. Here we go!

Step one: Choose the language of the installation. Ubuntu comes translated into many languages and one of them is Bulgarian. In this step, your actions are limited to a simple choice of language that took to the installation.

Step two: Choose time zone. You must select a country and city of habitation to be able to identify correctly Ubuntu time zone and current time.

Step three: Choose keyboard layout. Following the logic of the previously made your choice, Ubuntu offers adequate Keyboard layout, you should be allowed to change it if desired.

Step four: Preparing the hard disk installation. This is probably part of the plant, which really must be taken here since become a division, recording the disc in and neglect can destroy your valuable information. However, if sufficiently closely reading the description of possible actions that offer Ubuntu, no danger. Here your choice where to be installed Ubuntu is limited to three ways: a) automatically fill the nezaetoto disk space - absolutely safely, logical choice for people without experience in installing b) Automatically delete the entire hard drive and record - this option choose only if you are sure you want to be! DELETE ALL CONTENT! disk c) manually separate the disc - a method suitable for more experienced users who want a full control over the installation of Ubuntu .

Note: One of the above mentioned features missing in the attached picture, as in the case Ubuntu is installed on a blank disc off.

Step five: Migration documents and settings. This step Ubuntu verify that the computer has installed other operating systems, and Windows. If they are found Ubuntu offers to install it from there to be taken username, password and personal documents to browser settings and more. This is a very nice addition because it provided more easily migrate from one OS to another.

Note: There are reports that the introduction of personal documents and settings from Windows Vista many times fails.

Step six: Create a user. This makes it possible to create and describe the basic user who will work with the system. The required parameters are: name, user name, password and name of the computer.

Step 7: Review the settings and start the process of installing Ubuntu. This step is fully informative nature. In her in a box are smesteni all settings that are made in the previous steps. After reviewing them, the installation of Ubuntu is activated by pressing the button Install.

This user intervention in the plant closes. Ubuntu installation begins as displays information and where to come and yet how much time remains.

During installation, you feel free to ferrets out the Internet, to reconsider the available programs and get used to the new OS. This is the main charm of this method of installation - not looking stupid ad Slogans dies and how great is that OS … and just use it until it is installed.

Depending on the parameters of the computer installation can last between 20 and 40 minutes. Having finished, Ubuntu will prompt you to restart your computer.

Now is the time to restart and to meet a modern operating system.

    Enjoy using Ubuntu!

Like yourself, you can be sure the procedure by installing GNU / Linux OS in particular Ubuntu can be called anything else but not complex. In fact, if you think that these 7 steps are difficult … you run arbitrary installation of Windows and you list the steps … ;)

In conclusion I can vmetna that this is not the only way to enjoy Ubuntu. For older computers or special needs have called. Alternative CD. For people loath to be far away from Windows, but interested in installing Ubuntu has another interesting way - installing Ubuntu from the working environment of Windows XP and the opportunity then to remove from the Control Panel! But these interesting and less common methods - recently in separate articles …

  • Graphical programs in Ubuntu

    January 23rd, 2009

Striving to be a complete and functional operating system comes with Ubuntu pre-installed programs for viewing, cataloging and editing graphics. Below I will briefly present them.

EOG (Eye Of Gnome) - This is the main program in Ubuntu for quick viewing of images. Among the possibilities are: support of 15 common graphical format; record in 4 different format, increase / decrease images, printing, maintenance and reading of the EXIF data recorded by digital cameras, able to change the JPEG files without loss of quality and Some other functions.

Essentially, this is small and lightweight program, which pop open variety of images and can perform basic operations with them.

F-Spot Photo Manager - The purpose of this program is more complicated. It is a kind of library collections your images. Among the possibilities are: the submission of photos from a folder or digital camera, color correction, transfers of redness; prorazmeryavane and cropped images, add additional text description (tag) to images, review and sort the images in folders or month of filming, search by description of the picture, review the full screen (fullscreen); recorder drive to selected images; izparashtane e-mail, upload to sites like Flickr and others.

This program has a lot to offer and probably will suit users who have large collections of photos in multiple folders.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) - For nezapoznatite I can say that this is the best handling raster images with open source. The mere fact that is often mellow as a free analogue of programs rank of Adobe Photoshop and PaintShop Pro, speak enough quality i. For GIMP is difficult in a few words to describe the opportunities it offers: a complete set of tools for drawing, opportunities implementing the transfusion and zaglazhdane images, alpha channel support, layers and channels, masks, text layers, tools for transformation and selection of parts of the image; infinite number of operations for revocation / repetition, a large number of filters, maintenance scripts, giving opportunity for automated action, allowing the architecture to GIMP to add expanded functionality (plugins) and yet …

GIMP beyond the needs of ordinary consumers as a tool for editing images. In this context would be difficult facing a situation where you want to edit images, and GIMP can not help.

Briefly, it was essential programs for review / cataloging / editing images that are part of Ubuntu. They list available to install programs are far from zero. Many more programs are only available with a click of the mouse through software packages in Ubuntu Synaptic. Do it however may not be enough because these programs represent an appropriate and suitable choice for everyday needs.

  • Office work with Ubuntu

    January 23rd, 2009

As interesting software has, finally again have to load another table or text … :) It is, without boring the necessary office activities can not. Ubuntu is not ignored this software category and shortly we will see what is stake. Before I continue I want to stress that in the case in an office job really understand the most common everyday tasks and activities - word processing, spreadsheets, organizing tasks, e-mail, creating and opening archives, reminder notes, etc. .

    1. Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations - This category is Ubuntu stake in one of the proven leaders in recent years, namely Open Office. I suppose most of you heard or even already working with this wonderful product. For those for whom it is unknown, can in a few words to explain that in general this is totally free analogue of Microsoft Office. It consists of several components responsible for different activities:

    - Writer - analogue Word in every respect, in some respects and surpassing it. Offers compatibility with Word files and many other formats. As its primary advantage may indicate that it created files are platform independent and open source, ensuring that it is not necessary to have exactly Open Office to read them. Something is radically different from the approach of Microsoft. This file format was rated in the EU and elected one of the standards for e-documents. Word of accustomed to customers will not represent particular difficulty to adapt to the interface of Writer.

    - Calc - analogue of Excel. Again in most of the functions of both programs are identical, with only difference in their menus. Here offers compatibility with files on Excel, which is quite high. In practice everyday difficult to have faced a problem opening, except that it’s really large and complex tables filled with scripts and more. alike. However, this is rather rare cases. And here as the default file format is adopted open standard, in Writer. Purely visual can not say that Calc hidden surprises.

    - Impress - analogue of PowerPoint. And here we have a very similar interface very similar features and familiar way of working on relevant experience with PowerPoint. On the effects maybe PowerPoint offers greater diversity. However, more built-in features for editing facilities. There is compatibility with PowerPoint files, and open format is selected for a major.

In addition to OpenOffice to add that it also include programs Database - analogue of Access, and also Draw - a vector graphics software does not have an analogue of Microsoft Office. All programs in OpenOffice can export in PDF format, which is very convenient feature where you want the file to read-only or want to make sure in his uniform format wherever open. In the material I have no chance to stop a detailed introduction to each part of OpenOffice. And do not consider it necessary. Ultimately, it is important that its use leaves office feeling full package and not unpleasant missing features used with Microsoft Office. Moreover - a dramatic change in the interface of Office 2007 from previous editions, very likely is used for user transition from the current version of Ms Office to OpenOffice is more easy than to Office 2007 …

    2. E-mail, memos, calendars and tasks - These four very trivialni but also inseparable from any modern office-type programs in Ubuntu are united in the face of Evolution. The program offers a single interface, which form separate sections embodied these things. As in previous material I considered functionality as the Evolution e-mail, I will not dwell on it in detail. It offers a perfect combination of opportunity and security. Access to remind notes, tasks and calendar is by switching to the category at the interface of Evolution. Notes and tasks can be grouped into a 20-over they suggested categories or to be given new ones. Switching to calendar gives a summary view of the current month, current part of the day and a list of all notes and tasks.

    3. PDF reader - Every him happened to get super important PDF files … and it appears that Windows has no program for this purpose. In Ubuntu there is no such situation. There for this type of program files is Evince. It offers basic functions to read PDF files. However, it is necessary to open such files or other interactive in particular content then you will need Adobe Reader. It was not pre-installed version but there including Linux for Ubuntu and easy to add. In most of the sluchayte Evince will be more than sufficient. Of note, this program aims to be universal reader and also support PDF, offers reading and DejaVu, CBR, DVI and presentations of OpenOffice.

    4. Helpers - A small but weighing in place aids will mention arhivatora File Roler and calculator GcalcTool. Because of the usual destination so nothing to say about them. File Roller can open and record popular types of files such as ZIP, RAR, 7Z. GCalcTool offers more than standard and scientific, Finacial and extended view with respective functions.

That was the main set pre-installed office applications in Ubuntu. Hard to say that the thing missing. If you still need to show other applications with similar or different purpose, available list available through the management software in Ubuntu - Synaptic.

  • Setting up the network in Ubuntu

    January 23rd, 2009

That’s hardly remained many PCs that are not connected to a network, whether local or Internet. Thus the network settings are something in which almost every consumer will have sooner or later to pass. In this line of thought is important to ensure that access to them is easy, but the opportunities for setting - intelligible. Ubuntu is one of the operating system is always seeking to be user friendly as possible. This approach my show and the organization of network settings. Access to them is through the menu system - System Administration - Network.

In the address window access: zasecheni network cards and modems, computer name, domain name, setting Hosts and others. These settings are separated into separate podprozortsi and access to them is easy and quick. The settings of network card as a type of binding (cabin address or DHCP), address the Internet gateway (gateway) are also available in a choice of either zasechenite network cards.

Once the settings are fixed and the card in action, the status and displaying system notification area (system tray) through Network Manager applet.

Besides informative feature this program gives very quick access to change settings. In addition to her sea facilitate holders of mobile computers with wireless cards. When the wireless card is activated, all zasecheni wireless networks are displayed in the popup menu, which graphically shows signal strength. Including network to a simple choice with your mouse, then if necessary, provide a password for access.

Ubuntu provides another tool by which global can be set way of connecting to the Internet. This is a system - Settings - Network server firm.

Given here are global settings for each user and program requiring Internet access will first be paid to them - eg. mail client, IM client and others.

Besides opportunities for setting Ubuntu offers tools for monitoring and diagnosing network. They are intended for more advanced users, a little more familiar with the networks. Have access to them through the menu system - System Administration - Network tools.

Here in graphic form has access to functions such as ping, traceroute, whois and others. alike. A viewer probably would rarely turn to these tools, although in certain cases by checking the link to an address, they can be useful.

It was originally proposed by the Ubuntu tools for managing and monitoring networks and network devices. More curious users can secure access to a lot more other programs with similar functions in graphic or cantilevered form.

  • files and printing operations under Ubuntu

    January 22nd, 2009

One of the things that users of Windows wont … is Windows Explorer. Daily use usually makes it forget that it is just one of many file managers. In this connection, beginning with selected work in Ubuntu Nautilus file manager can be a little foreign. Below will try briefly to represent it.

Most often it came to it from the menu places. A file manager with the kind similar to that:

Overall, the type of Nautilus e pretty standard - has a toolbar, the sidebar, main window status bar. In more scrutiny, however, inevitably will make the impression a few things. Firstly, it probably is the lack of navigation bar. Actually, this band has, but it differs from the known our pull-down menu of Windows Explorer.

This navigation in different folders and subfolders is done by the pressures emerging buttons with their names bar. Although different from the approach of Windows, this method is very intuitive and acclimatized to it quickly. Naturally, if you want to directly enter the address you request a folder, Nautilus offers this possibility. Switching to such a scheme is by pressing the appropriate icon in the navigation bar or keyboard shortcut Ctrl L.

Another slick of Nautilus is that in the sidebar may change the appearance of devices and locations on your computer.

    Display options are:

    - Places - always show all available units and portable media and the appearance does not change dynamically in navigation in the main window;

    - Information - in the panel are showing more detailed information about the selected file or folder;

    - Darvoviden - this system is similar to the system known from Windows Explorer;

    - History - the last viewed files / folders;

    - Notes - sidebar change its kind in the blank space in which to write notes;

    - Logos - logos available shows that can be attributed to the folders.

Logos are also interesting extra on Nautilus. They represent a mini-icons that are attached to the folder icon and suggest what content i. Below is some examples of folders containing documents, films, music and photos:

Moreover logos Nautilus allows you to put your chosen image as a background window. Additions like these are the things without which you can, in principle, but quickly privikva.

Moreover, that takes care of file operations, Nautilus responsible for the rendering of the work area (Desktop). Its characteristic feature is that it shows the contents of images and text files, giving the opportunity to change and dimensions of individual icons. To clarify two examples will apply normal text file icon and increased text file icon.

You may notice that in the increased size of the icon began to show it contained text - something which is very convenient for a quick look at files. It has generally been more different things that you may encounter in their work with Nautilus.

Along with the spread of computers in the years running and distribution of printers. Today are places where no printer, so it is important that Ubuntu can give access to these devices. This new good. You could say that Ubuntu generally handle this task successfully. Of course, not every printer can recognize without any effort, but these are rare cases. Most times you install a new printer only goes through four steps:

    - Step 1: Start program for the printer. This is the menu system - System Administration - Print. A window in which the show is already installed printers and be able to add new ones.

    - Step 2: Connect to the printer. This show zasechenite local and network printers. If these are not those that interest you, you have the option to manually specify where the appropriate device.

    - Step 3: Choose the model. The available choices of printers is quite big and probably a lot of models will be a problem.

    - Step 4: Name, location and description of the printer. Purely formal, this step enables you to name and describe the taste of your printer. It installed the printer is finished and ready for action. Although compatibility is great, a good idea before making the transition from Windows to Ubuntu, to check whether maintenance of your printer. It is possible if there is no built-in drivers to manually install new ones. In rare cases it is possible and there is no driver available (really rare).

With this going to end the rapid introduction of these simple and basic operations while working with the operating system. The next survey will present the fun side of Ubuntu - those little vremegubeshti games, which bring freshness to sometimes chore …

  • Fun with Ubuntu

    January 22nd, 2009

In previous articles looked the more serious sides of Ubuntu. This will present the fun side in the face of the games included in it. Most operating systems for quite some time implicate at least a few small vremegubeshti fun and games. Ubuntu is not left back this nepisano rule. Actually it out with some breast next to Windows, say, on the diversity of games. After installation of Ubuntu has 17 games finished. Almost all logic to a greater or lesser extent, so unless you like this type of games you need to install extra on your taste. Selected games more popular are:

    1. 4-in-number - very popular game and known as the 4-in-line. Game pieces in which the objective is to arrange the first four pool horizontal / vertical / diagonal, and prevent the enemy to make its number. The game supports and network system.

    2. Solitaire - Collection of different varieties (80) of this game. Includes own version of the game known as Freecell, known to the people of Windows.

    3. Mini - Where without this classic? :) The aim is through logical thinking and some help from the computer to know where the mines are hidden in the playing field.

    4. Mahdzhong - Type patience from the East, whose aim is to select pairs of identical tiles while clear playing field or no couples.

    5. Same - Jigsaw popular game aimed grouping and clear the premises of the playing field with the least possible action. And known as Jawbreaker.

    6. Sudoku-logic game with Japanese proizhod.Tselta to fill in the bookmaking 9h9 grid so that each column, row and each of the nine 3h3 boxes contain numbers 1 to 9. The game can be varied greatly as the amount of playing fields and complexity.

    7. Tetris - undying classic embodied in himself an innocence and a big party. The description is redundant …

    8. Chess - King of logic and strategy games. The implementation of this game in Ubuntu enable mixed game against machine / person, change the view (including 3D mode) and maintenance of various game engines (engines).

That was a 17-polar of these games included in Ubuntu. It is clear that their choice is not random and it can be seen striving to satisfy different tastes.

Understandably, however, that the proposals above are not far enough for people to call themselves geymari. For them to the list of games available through Synaptic has proposed more titles covering different genres - FPS, RTS, RPG, Sim, Racing and others. Apart from these offers are available for Ubuntu and quite commercial titles: Alpha Centauri, Civilization: Call To Power, Cold War, Darwinia, Doom 3, Doom 3: RoE, Heavy Metal: FAKK 2, Neverwinter Nights exp., Postal 2 , Quake 3, Quake 4, Rune, Second Life, Serious Sam 2, Tribes 2, Unreal Tournament / 2003/2004/2007, Uplink, X2, X3 and others.

Despite those titles, currently GNU / Linux and Ubuntu, including fixed lagging in the number of supported commercial titles. This is due largely to the popularity of the Windows platform and DirectX. Nice is that the situation now maybe change some of the major developers of games over the past few years, insurance and continue to provide support for GNU / Linux.

I hope these few indents to have an idea of the possibilities for delay of Ubuntu. It should be borne in mind that nothing I cover all available titles and games - for example via WINE-emulator of Windows environment, not some among them have hits like World of Warcraft and CounterStrike. Complete and permanent updated list of all available Ubuntu games can be found at: http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Native_Games

As shown alternatives there, it just a little effort and willingness to transfer a person to a new software for it. In most cases the transition there will be particularly difficult because the specific activities of the software and suggests similar ways of implementation. This piece and the ability to run Windows software under Ubuntu through Wine. Most if not all Windows programs listed here may, by Wine to install and use properly in Ubuntu.

  • BTC with a new

    January 21st, 2009

BTC are clearly the kings of “advantageous” offers to consumers. After a month ago announced a reduction in prices only for new customers but not for their frequent ones, are now izmadrili something else. Decided to have advanced from BTK addition to offering ADSL access in the form of Wi-Fi router. So far, so good … but it does not end like this. Careful reading of their tender disclosed that fact to use this router user should pay and monthly fee for itself (!?!) amounting to 4.80 if the contract is for 12 months or half if it is for 24 months. Despite the expectations after this period, ownership of the routers remain … known to the BTC! I sit you gently and ask - what is the meaning of a user to accept such an offer? So is it only for one year with the money for a fee of foreign router he practically can buy their own and probably better? For the mass of customers do not know - I will miss this new offer … ;)

That it will take is unclear, but it is clear to me then what do you do with it. Probably go to another customer …
